“Does your newspaper give a fuck about you?”

Remember those good old days when everyone at home would wait for the newspaper and then glue themselves for hours till every word was read. Yes, Those good old days when news in the newspapers made sense and news was actual news; had depth to it and not just random shit like we read today. I wonder what went wrong; was it lack of “ethics” or were “responsibilities” forgotten on the part of journalists or was it the rise in the yellow and tabloid journalism or perhaps were “WE” responsible for all this.

I remember my dad saying “Back in days, we read news reports which had in-depth analysis of the whole issue. There was no opportunity to question. ” I wondered how true it is. I recently went through original works of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, Investigative journalists from “The Washington Post”, online. I was shocked to see how detailed and organized the investigation of the break in of Democratic National Committee’s Watergate building was not only done but reported. These journalists uncovered information suggesting that the knowledge of break in and cover up led deep into the justice department, FBI, CIA and even White house. This eventually led to resignation of the then US President Richard Nixon.

Think about it. A reportage which was well organized, analyzed and in-depth led to resignation of the country’s president. Now THAT’s the power of Journalism.

Let’s take an example which is closer home. Remember the “EMERGENCY” of late 1970’s in India? The emergency which lasted for 21 months. The then President of India Frakhruddin Ali Ahmed upon advice by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency. Elections and all civil liberties were suspended, including Free Press. Did this stop the “Real” Journalists? Hell no. They still wrote discreetly; reported events secretly; gave important information to public. All this with no exception in the analysis or depth of the story.

Look at the print media today. We have news articles. Oh yeah, We certainly do. So- called “News” articles. Let’s ask ourselves a few questions.
a)     Did the article make sense?
b)     Was the article “newsworthy”?
c)     Was reporting it necessary?
d)     Was it well analyzed?
e)     Did it have depth to it?

For most of the “news articles”, the majority of answers are a big NO.

I first thought it was just with Tabloids like Mumbai Mirror which report really queer stuff. Who’s dating whom in Bollywood, the most grotesque incident from your neighborhood, scientific facts which are really interesting but hard to find sources. Tabloids are famous for such stuff. Why shouldn’t they be? After all, we love to read such stuff! Right?

The “Real” journalists today are writing shallow, most of them, with almost no depth in their work. The reporting is very superficial and sensationalism is the new trend. They write about politicians and politics, actors and cinema, food and wine, love and relationships. But, where is the “Depth”?

Like I mentioned before, I could all blame it on two factors – “Ethics” and “Responsibilities”.

“Ethics” is what most journalist lack today. Although most of the journalists who come from journalism schools are taught “Media ethics”. But, then what about the rest, they too have ethics right? Lets just say, we all are slowly losing our so-called “Ethics”.

Next comes “Responsibilities”. Yes, the journalists have responsibility towards the society – report events as they happen, unbiased and untouched, with thorough analysis and dept to it. But, it’s not just the journalists’ responsibility. It’s also the responsibility of the common man to make sure Press is free and fair. It’s their responsibility to make sure the journalists’ reportage is well analyzed and the topic of discussion is not random.

I wonder if this is the condition of the news media today, what it would be tomorrow?

I am pretty sure that “ETHICS” and “RESPONSIBILITIES” would be almost, if not completely, erased from a journalist’s dictionary.

If so then, God only can save us from the impending doom.

Queer Azaadi March, Mumbai 2011

They say “Closets are for hangers, not for humans.”
So it should be.

Hundreds of LGBT community members and straight supporters march on the streets of Mumbai on 29Th January 2011 for their right to be accepted and respected as they are.  Marchers were from different backgrounds – Students, professionals, parents of the community members, etc. Though there were a few people at the start, many people joined in as the march reached its end.

“The response to this year’s pride march was overwhelming”, said Harish Iyer, a gay-rights activist.

“What was more surprising was that almost none of the marchers, gay or straight, didn’t wear masks, which is a positive thing. This shows that, now, LGBT members are no more ashamed or scared. ”, said Harish.

Celina Jaitley was present at the pride march for quite some time. “No matter what happenes, remember always. I AM WITH YOU AND I LOVE YOU.”, said Celina. She has been working for gay rights for quite some time now.

“A year after the historical judgment passed by the Delhi High Court to De-criminalize section 377, LGBT members in India have started voicing their opinions strongly. Many have also dared to “come out” to their parents. This is a good sign.”, said another gay-rights activist who didn’t wish his name to be disclosed.
Students from colleges like St Xavier’s college, Mumbai too marched at the pride.

“Homo or hetro, what difference does it make. We all are humans. All humans should be treated equal. No matter who you are or whom you love. ”, said, Shreya Singh, a student from St Xavier’s college.

“I love my best friend and he is gay. I am here for him. I know what he goes through everyday being in closet.”, said another student who didn’t wish to be named.

“The current young generation is more accepting towards homosexuality than ever before in the history of India. Perhaps, through them, we might be able to reach that future we all dreamt about.”, said Rahul Sinha, a 40 year old gay man from Bangalore.

With the current trends, the acceptance of the LGBT community by the comman man is possible but a difficult task. For every member of  LGBT community in India, still, there are
“Miles to go before I sleep, Miles to go before I sleep."

MEMORIES

As I write this, sitting under a moonlit sky, the only word which comes to my mind is “HOME”- Home Sweet Home. A place which has a zillion cherished memories – sweet and sour. Memories of my mom feeding me with her hands; back then even the most bitter “karela” tasted sweet and now even the sweetest sweetdish tastes sour. Memories of the gala time spent with my father which often ended with an intellectual discussion. He was the biggest source of information for me.  To put it right, he was my personal brand of “ENCYCLOPAEDIA”. Memories of my “BELOVED” sister who means the whole world to me. Her sweetness hidden behind her simplicity. Her selflessness reflected in her every action.  Memories of the lullabies my grandmother used to sing, to put me to sleep. Her caress was the most heavenly feeling I have ever felt. Memories of my grandfather whose life-enriching morals taught me the right way to lead a life.  Memories of my friends who taught me a lot about life, much more than my parents could. Their effort to pull me out of depression at times and put me on the right path.
All these bring tears in my eyes. Tears of joy. Tears of laughter. Tears of all the wonderful moments spent together. But, one thing reassuring me every time about my family’s happiness is “THE STORY OF MY JOURNEY TO MUMBAI- The Story Of My Sucess.”
So, I wipe off the tears from my eyes for am sure that behind every tear rolling down my family’s cheeks is  the happiness for my success and not the sorrow for my departure.

L.I.F.E.

Life?

What is life?

A fairy tale?  A roller coaster ride?  A journey to remember ?  A dark past to forget ?

Life is one?

Life is many?

One/ many?

Never mind.

Life according to me is a quest.
Quest for knowledge.
Quest for love.
Quest for “MONEY”.

Actually , the order is vice versa – Quest for “MONEY”. Quest for love. Then, quest for knowledge.

Money – everybody runs behind money. Money money and money.......... everyone is hungry for money.

No honey, no worry.

No money, full worry.

Worry- we worry all the time. Worry about money. Worry about honey. Worry about everything and also worry about nothing.

Love- everyone loves to be loved. I love to be loved. People love to be loved by me.

Love overpowers money.

Money buys luxuries.

Money buys villas.

Love brings family in those villas.

Love makes that house a home.

Love survives recession.

Recession kills money.

Knowledge- knowledge is our “so called” education.

Knowledge is basically how things work.

Quest for knowledge is quest for god.

God is in each one of us.

So, Quest for god is quest to find our inner-self.
